Former Singapore trainer Danny Murphy is celebrating his first winner in England, since moving there in July.
The Irishman took the opportunity of a lifetime only six weeks ago to move to Bawtry in South Yorkshire to train for Willie Mackay and while the incessant rain for the first month put on hold plans to run many of the horses, Murphy was thrilled to watch Spume and John Egan win the Hares of Snape Handicap (Class 5) (3yo) (1600m) at the North Yorkshire track of Thirsk, on Monday.
A former Sir Michael Stoute-trained galloper, Spume was resuming from a break and the three-year-old ran out a workmanlike winner.
Taken to the lead over the final 400m by Egan, Spume responded well under pressure going home an easy two-length winner over Tencendur with Pennyrock a short head away third.
Spume by Alhaarth (IRE) from Sea Spray (IRE) (Royal Academy (USA) was bred by Ballymacoll Stud Farm Ltd and has now won two from seven starts.
“That’s a relief!” said Murphy. “It hasn’t been easy getting settled in and it didn’t stop raining for the first month which set us back in our training. This winner though has certainly brightened the day.”
Egan was not smiling quite as much as Murphy after he picked up a three-day ban after being found guilty of careless riding aboard Spume and will be out of action between August 24-26.
