Daniel Murphy

Daniel Murphy is an experienced Irish horseman with more than 30 years in the industry.

He started his career in the thoroughbred world as a jockey in Ireland in 1977 before turning to training in 1990.

In 1995, he relocated to Macau where he won the Macau Derby in 1997 and 2000.

His victories in Macau also included the 1997 Macau Sand Derby, the 1998 Macau Gold Cup Trophy, the 1999 STDM Stanley Ho Trophy and the 1999 Charity Cup.

Murphy trained at Penang in Malaysia from May 2001 to May 2002 before returning to Ireland in June 2002.

Murphy joined the training ranks at Kranji, Singapore with a stable of 45 boxes in 2004 and settling in quickly to the Singapore life, he was once again no stranger to the winner’s circle.

12 months later Murphy elected to head once more to the international stage and took his English bred gelding Terfel to the Dubai Racing Carnival.

His faith in the horse paid off when with the benefit of two outings Terfel triumphed in the US$110,000 Marju sponsored by Derrinstown Stud over 2,000m on the turf at Nad Al Sheba.

Ridden by John Egan, the six-year-old by Lion Cavern out of the Aragon mare Montserrat, defeated the Doug Watson-trained Mutasallil (Richard Hills) by one-and-a-half lengths.

Murphy continued to train winner after winner in Singapore and culminated his outstanding 2005 season with a win in the prestigious Group 1 $1.35 Million Singapore Gold Cup, with stable star Terfel and local rider Soo Khoon Beng.

A more than capable trainer and held in high regard by his peers, the win was, and still remains, one of the most popular in Singapore racing history.
